The best options backtester
By Faizan Ahmad. Updated .
The Tradytics backtester takes a strategy in plain words: an AI analyst writes the test, runs it on real data in a sandbox and shows the equity curve against SPY, every trade, Sharpe, drawdown, win rate and the code it ran. Options fill at the real bid and ask from March 2022, at $0.65 a contract, and the same test can use every options flow order since March 31, 2025 (19.96 million), dark pool prints since October 2024, Kalshi and Polymarket markets and US stocks and ETFs since 2003. Every result also shows the strategy after trading costs, against buy and hold, and on an untouched final stretch of the period. Free runs 1 backtest a day, Plus ($39) 5 and Pro ($69) 25. Of the other tools checked, Market Chameleon has fixed option backtest templates, TrendSpider and TradingView test chart rules on stocks and futures, and Trade Ideas tests stock alerts over 60 days; none tests on options flow, dark pool prints or prediction markets.

Tradytics
- Real option fills. No option is priced from a model: every fill is the real bid or ask at that moment, and a contract held to expiry pays its intrinsic value.
- Flow as a signal. Every flow order since March 31, 2025, with its side, premium, sweep and opening tags and size against open interest. How to backtest options flow.
- Dark pool as a signal. Every block print since October 28, 2024, with its rank against the stock's own year. How to backtest dark pool prints.
- Prediction markets as a signal. Kalshi and Polymarket markets since 2021, so a Fed question can drive an ETF or an option trade.
- Checks on every result. Trading costs, buy and hold, and a final stretch of the period left untouched while the rule was built.
- One click from anywhere. The Backtest button sits beside Chat on every page; /backtest opens it. The Tradytics backtester.
The data underneath is the same as the rest of the app: clean options flow, ranked dark pool prints, Signals from a study of 560 million pattern and horizon combinations, Probabilities and the Tradytics AI Fund.
What a test looks like
Tests people run: the ten stocks with the most call premium bought at the ask each week; the five stocks with the most dark pool dollars each week, held for the week; SMH when Kalshi's Fed market favors a cut, QQQ otherwise; and the Mag 7 at equal weight, rebalanced monthly over five years. Follow-ups in the same thread ("only when the VIX is under 20", "use the 30-delta call instead") reuse what the analyst built.
The other backtesters
- Market Chameleon: the closest on options, with win rates and returns for options of similar traits and a choice of ask or mid entry, on fixed templates. Tradytics vs Market Chameleon.
- TrendSpider: a strong no-code tester for chart rules with multi-symbol and forward testing; options and indices are out of scope by its own help center. Tradytics vs TrendSpider.
- TradingView: Pine Script strategy tests with deep backtesting on higher plans, for traders who code. Tradytics vs TradingView.
- Trade Ideas: OddsMaker tests any stock alert over the last 60 days on Premium ($254). Tradytics vs Trade Ideas.
- Unusual Whales, MenthorQ and Barchart: stock and ETF portfolio tests, how often MenthorQ's levels held, and Barchart's opinion signal on Premier ($29.95). Tradytics vs MenthorQ, Tradytics vs Barchart.
Bottom line
For options strategies on real bid and ask fills, and for testing options flow, dark pool prints or prediction markets as signals, Tradytics is the one backtester checked that does all of it, in plain words. TrendSpider and TradingView fit chart rules on stocks and futures, and Market Chameleon fits quick template tests on option traits.
Common questions
Can I backtest options strategies with real prices?
On Tradytics, yes: every option trade fills at the real bid and ask from March 2022, with $0.65 a contract. Market Chameleon's templates let you choose an ask or mid entry; TrendSpider says it cannot backtest options data.
Can I backtest options flow?
Yes, on Tradytics, which keeps every options flow order since March 31, 2025. A rule like "buy the call when someone sweeps more than $5M at the ask" runs on that history with real option quotes. Bullflow's API replays one past day of its alerts.
Can TrendSpider backtest options?
No. Its help center says it "can not backtest indices or options data"; options data can only feed custom indicators.
Is there a free options backtester?
Tradytics Free runs 1 backtest a day with real option quotes, flow and dark pool data; Plus runs 5 and Pro 25. Finviz's backtester shut down on March 26, 2026.
Do I need to code?
Not on Tradytics: you describe the strategy and the analyst writes and runs the code, then shows it with every trade. TradingView needs Pine Script; TrendSpider and Trade Ideas use rule builders.
