Is Unusual Whales worth it?

By Faizan Ahmad. Updated .

Unusual Whales is worth it if you trade options several times a week and will use its breadth. Retail Basic, at $50 a month as of October 2026, gets you real-time options flow on a terminal that also covers GEX, dark pool prints, Congress trades, an AI analyst and phone apps, which is fair value for an active trader. It isn't worth it if you trade occasionally, expect flow to tell you what to buy, or want a refund safety net, because all sales are final. Start with its free tier (flow 2 trading days late) or a cheaper tool, and upgrade only when delayed data is clearly holding you back.

Who is Unusual Whales worth it for?

Who should skip it?

What flow can and can't tell you

This is where most disappointment comes from, so it's worth one real example. On October 30, 2026 at 10:42 AM ET, with SPX at 7655.67, two blocks printed in the same minute: 5,000 SPX December 18 7000 calls for $348.68M and 5,000 SPX December 18 8000 puts for $186.77M. At 1:52 PM, the same pair printed again at 4,500 contracts each: $294.52M in the calls and $191.79M in the puts.

Read one row at a time, that looks like a $349M bullish bet followed by a $187M bearish one. Same size, same minute, same expiry, twice: the signature of one multi-leg trade, not two opposite bets. Any full-tape tool, Unusual Whales included, will show you these prints. Whether it pays off depends on whether you, or the tool, can read them. Cheaper ways to get the same answers

The Tradytics AI analyst is built for the problem above: it pulls the flow itself and says what a trade likely is. Asked about NVDA's flow on the Free plan, it flagged that the biggest print, $114M in Nov 20 $240 puts, was a mid-price spread, not a clean bet.

The verdict

For an active trader who will use flow, GEX, dark pool and Congress data together, Retail Basic at $50 a month is worth it, and Pro or Max only make sense if you hit the alert or AI limits or need minute-by-minute SPX exposure. For everyone else, the free tier or a cheaper tool answers the same questions, and with no refunds, it pays to be sure before you subscribe.

Common questions

Does Unusual Whales have a free trial?

Not on the dashboard. It offers a free tier instead, with flow 2 trading days late. The API has a 7-day free trial.

Can you get a refund from Unusual Whales?

No. All sales are final, though support can switch you to another product on the same billing period within 7 days.

Is the free version of Unusual Whales any good?

It's good for learning the tool, since you get the whole dashboard. With flow 2 trading days late, it's not usable for timing trades.

Is Retail Pro or Max worth it over Basic?

Only if you need unlimited alerts or more AI use (Pro), or minute-by-minute SPX dealer exposure and the GEX Periscope (Max).

Is Unusual Whales data real time?

Flow is real time on paid plans, and it says its dark pool feed is real time too. Off-exchange trades must be reported within 10 seconds, but the biggest prints are often reported late, sometimes hours later, so dark pool data is best read as levels.
